Day 10: Judges 11 – The Unnamed Daughter

Developing A Heart of Worship as a Single Woman

Mountain trekking, I think is a pretty challenging feat to undertake and I was most privileged to have been able to have a glimpse into it, when a close and awesome friend willingly shared his experience of it. From preparing his body physically to actually climbing that dangerous, risky and unpredictable mountain, he said the most challenging part of the entire process was mentally putting your mind into the mission ahead.

Now I would like to think the mountain that Jephthah’s unnamed daughter and her friends went away to, was also a challenging enough mountain. Maybe the physical mountain itself was pretty average, but, the challenge that Jephthah’s daughter faced, the mental challenge of preparing herself for what lay ahead when she returned back to her father, was enormous.

As with all life altering decisions that one can make, surrendering her life in obedience to her father and trusting God, displayed such a beautiful heart of worship. Knowing that her life was offered into the hands of her maker.

I’m sure any single person reading this would struggle at the very thought of surrendering “to live a life of total surrender to God”. Most people would probably switch off at this point, thoughts immediately going on amber red alert, Me? Surrender? Oh no, that’s not going to happen!

Even I had an issue with the word surrender just looking at it, I mean as a single woman, to have the independence and the freedom to live life as one sees fit in this current world, is a wonderful opportunity given, that probably many may not have been able to experience.

But as I looked at the word independence, separating it into two words, “In” and “dependence”, I realized that a life that has lived successfully, can become truly beautiful being dependent in God. It’s no longer about simply living a self centered life and being successful but living a life that says I trust you God even through my disappointments, struggles, frustrations and limitations.

Romans 6:13b says “but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.” (The Woman’s Study Bible NKJV)

So to the many single unnamed daughters, while I know surrendering is really not a hot topic, how much more reassuring is the knowledge knowing that as you offer to God your life worries, frustrations and success, by trusting in Him, your lifestyle truly becomes a beautiful heart of worship.

Be Blessed.
