Day 11: Judges 11 – The Unnamed Daughter

Having God as My Best Friend Forever

We all have someone that we can call a best friend, someone who knows you really well, that at times its seems like they can read your mind. Someone whom you can just be yourself without worrying what the other person thinks.

But as life progresses and all the obligations of becoming a responsible adult increases, you spend lesser and lesser time together. Eventually the regular contact you had with your best friend becomes a phone call maybe every 3 to 4 months or at best a text message every 6 months. The best friend you had becomes part of a sentence that goes something like “oh yeah, she was my best friend back then”. That security and acceptance that you had with your friend sometimes slowly fades away as you grow apart.

Its seems like genuine friends who are loyal, supportive, ready to hand a word of encouragement, share in your sorrows and even give you a reprimanding voice of reason are very rare to find. Friends like whom Jephthah’s unnamed daughter had.

Now I have been most fortunate and blessed to have found a group of close friends, whom like Jephthah’s daughter’s friends, have stood through time with me regardless of where they are, and for that I thank God for their lives. However, as I read through chapter 11 of The Purpose Driven Life written by Rick Warren, my heart was truly warmed being reminded that God would like to become best friends with me forever!

Friends simply enjoying nature

You see, there are certain check points in this journey of life where you will have to pass on your own, and your friends will probably not be around during those times.  So how much more reassuring is it to know that, God who created the heavens and the earth, who never leaves you, who knows every single detail about you, who is accepting of every part of you, wants to be your best friend through this entire journey.

For a single woman, that was the most reassuring thing that I had to repeat and read over to myself several times. I had to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. There is someone and not just someone, My God who will remain my best friend regardless of time and age. I wondered, just how do I cultivate, how do I build and protect this friendship? This precious gem of an opportunity.

And like any relationship or friendship its not rocket science to know that, to maintain a friendship that you truly treasure, you will maintain communication with your friend regardless of where you are or what time it is. You will be happy to spend time with them.

So I set myself the challenge to do exactly that, to set aside a little bit of my time at the beginning of the day to say thank-you Lord, to read his word and simply spend time with him. I admit, there are some days I may be a little rushed, and those are the times that I would give myself a mental reminder that this is not a friendship I would want to lose. And before attempting anything else I simply take a little pause to slow down, to read his word or listen to a beautiful song of praise. It resets the tone of my day knowing my God who is my best friend is beside me.

“The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him” Psalm 25:14a (The Woman’s Study Bible NKJV)

May you be blessed as you commit to building your friendship with God.
